Self-conscious about damaged or missing teeth in Honolulu HI? Ever wondered if you were a candidate for dental implants?

You should contact a qualified dentist such as Jason C. Ako, DDS of Kahala Cosmetic and Family Dentistry. A qualified Honolulu dentist dental implantssuch as Dr. Ako will help you explore options such as dental implants. Indeed, the chances are probably good that dental implants can restore your smile.

Why dental implants?

Dental implants are the most natural looking and functioning method of tooth restoration available. Simply stated, dental implants are going to be the closest thing to your real teeth your Honolulu dentist can provide you. This is because implants are designed to literally become a permanent part of your anatomy.

How do dental implants work?

In a dental implant procedure, your Honolulu will drill a hole or multiple holes directly into your jawbone and place the implant into the jawbone. The implant becomes as anchored as your real, natural jawbone tissue grows around the implant. This process is called Osseointegration.

Once the bone tissue heals and the implant is firmly anchored, your Honolulu dentist will screw in a titanium post, then attach a crown -- which has been specifically designed to look and act like your natural tooth – to that post. The result is a new tooth or teeth that look and work just like your natural teeth.

What are some advantages of implants?

Unlike a dental bridge, implants do not require your Honolulu dentist to shave, file down, or otherwise remove existing/remaining tooth enamel. Whereas a dental bridge is attached to two existing teeth (or implants), dental implants are actually designed to become a permanent part of your jaw.

Dental implants are permanent, so while your Honolulu dentist may need to occasionally adjust them, you won’t ever have to keep up with them like you would removable dentures.

Because dental implants are designed from the root up, they not only fill empty spaces caused by missing teeth but they actually preserve existing bone structure by “cultivating” your natural jawbone tissue. In fact, dental implants are the only tooth restoration procedure that preserves and stimulates natural bone tissue growth.

Dental implants are not for everyone so it is important to thoroughly discuss and weigh the options with your Honolulu dentist. For example, you should inform the dentist of medications you take, underlying medical conditions you might already have, or whether or not you smoke.
