Gaps in your smile don't have to be permanent, thanks to dental implants. Your Honolulu, HI, dentist Dr. Jason Ako explains how dental implantsimplants can restore your smile.

Dental implants in Honolulu, HI

Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that replaces your entire tooth. The implant, a small titanium post, bonds to your jawbone and supports an artificial tooth called a crown. The implant procedure involves placing the implants under the gums. In just a few months, your new implant will be fully bonded and ready to serve as the root for your new tooth. Once bonding occurs, your dentist will open your gum and add a connector, called an abutment, to the top of the implant. The abutment attaches your new crown to your implant. Implants are a good choice if you've lost one tooth, but are also used to replace multiple teeth.

Implants improve appearance and restore function

Do you hate looking in the mirror since you lost your tooth? A dental implant can improve your self-esteem and help you feel more confident in social settings. Although a dental implant is a great confidence booster, it offers another important benefit. When a tooth is missing, it's much harder to chew foods. Unfortunately, if you don't chew food thoroughly before you swallow, you may suffer from an upset stomach. Your dental implant will restore your ability to chew and bite normally, which can reduce gastrointestinal problems. Best of all, your new tooth looks and feels completely natural.

Dental implants can prevent bone loss

Bone loss is one of the unfortunate consequences of tooth loss. The problem occurs because your jawbone no longer receives needed stimulation from tooth roots. If your jawbone begins to recede, other teeth can become loose and you may even experience some sagging in the lower half of your face. Replacing your roots with an implant ensures that stimulation continues even after you've lost a tooth and prevents those problems.

Self-conscious about damaged or missing teeth in Honolulu HI? Ever wondered if you were a candidate for dental implants?

You should contact a qualified dentist such as Jason C. Ako, DDS of Kahala Cosmetic and Family Dentistry. A qualified Honolulu dentist dental implantssuch as Dr. Ako will help you explore options such as dental implants. Indeed, the chances are probably good that dental implants can restore your smile.

Why dental implants?

Dental implants are the most natural looking and functioning method of tooth restoration available. Simply stated, dental implants are going to be the closest thing to your real teeth your Honolulu dentist can provide you. This is because implants are designed to literally become a permanent part of your anatomy.

How do dental implants work?

In a dental implant procedure, your Honolulu will drill a hole or multiple holes directly into your jawbone and place the implant into the jawbone. The implant becomes as anchored as your real, natural jawbone tissue grows around the implant. This process is called Osseointegration.

Once the bone tissue heals and the implant is firmly anchored, your Honolulu dentist will screw in a titanium post, then attach a crown -- which has been specifically designed to look and act like your natural tooth – to that post. The result is a new tooth or teeth that look and work just like your natural teeth.

What are some advantages of implants?

Unlike a dental bridge, implants do not require your Honolulu dentist to shave, file down, or otherwise remove existing/remaining tooth enamel. Whereas a dental bridge is attached to two existing teeth (or implants), dental implants are actually designed to become a permanent part of your jaw.

Dental implants are permanent, so while your Honolulu dentist may need to occasionally adjust them, you won’t ever have to keep up with them like you would removable dentures.

Because dental implants are designed from the root up, they not only fill empty spaces caused by missing teeth but they actually preserve existing bone structure by “cultivating” your natural jawbone tissue. In fact, dental implants are the only tooth restoration procedure that preserves and stimulates natural bone tissue growth.

Dental implants are not for everyone so it is important to thoroughly discuss and weigh the options with your Honolulu dentist. For example, you should inform the dentist of medications you take, underlying medical conditions you might already have, or whether or not you smoke.

If you are a good candidate for dental implants or want to find out if you are, contact Kahala Cosmetic and Family Dentistry at 808-734-6022.

About Dental Implants

A dental implant consists of three parts:

The implant: This is a small metal post made from titanium that is inserted into the jawbone where your missing tooth once was.

The abutment: This piece attaches to the top of the implant and helps to link the implant and the artificial tooth together. Now, abutments are often made out of ceramic to be more aesthetically complementary to the artificial tooth; however, they can also be made out of steel, gold or titanium.

The artificial tooth: Also referred to as a dental crown, these tooth-shaped caps are attached to the abutment and offer a strong, durable alternative to a natural tooth. These teeth are often made out of ceramic since this offers a natural, tooth-colored appearance.

Getting Dental Implants

When it comes to getting dental implants in Honolulu it’s important to keep in mind that the process is complex and does take several months or up to a year to complete.

The first step requires us to insert the implant into the jawbone within the socket of your missing tooth. This surgery is performed right here in our office under local anesthesia. We will wait several weeks to allow the tissue and bone to grow around the metal implant. Once this occurs we will perform a second procedure.

The second procedure will entail opening up the gums to uncover the implant and then placing the abutment on top. We will then give your mouth a couple more weeks to heal before placing the dental crown over the implant.
